Joist installation

WORK SEQUENCE

Install the fall protection system before beginning the works

Marking the joists

Ensure the correct PPE is worn before carrying out the work.

First of all, move the dimensions of the stairwell opening on the joist plans to the inner skin of the super structure with the tape and pencil, from the stairwell markings mark out the remaining joists from the joist plan.

Measuring up the full joists
Measure between the two inner skins of super structure where the joists are going to be positioned, ensure 200mm/8 inch is added to allow the joist to sit on the load bearing wall at each end by 100mm/4 inch.

Marking out and cutting of the full joists
Transfer the dimensions from the previous stage onto the full joists. Put the joists onto the chop saw and cut to the marks ensuring your hands are safely away from the blade when pulling the saw down.

Positioning of the full joists - no plant required
METHOD: Whilst wearing the correct PPE, place the joists onto the markings on the inner skin of the super structure from the first stage.

Marking out for the stairwell - using a tape, pencil and set square
METHOD: whilst wearing the correct PPE, transfer the secondary dimensions of the stairwell onto the two trimmer joists using the tape and pencil, square the marks up ready for the joist hangers using the pencil and set square.

Fitting of the joist hangers for the stairwell - using a hammer
METHOD: whilst wearing the correct PPE, place the joist hangers onto the desired joist, line it up with the marks from the previous stage and fix them into position using the hammer (Paslode PPN 35i may also be using if available).

Measuring and marking up of the stairwell trimmer - using a tape and pencil
METHOD: whilst wearing the correct PPE, measure in between the two joists from the marking out of the stairwell stage using the tape, NOTE this dimension should match the one given on the joist plan, transfer the dimension onto the stairwell trimmer using the tape and pencil.

Positioning and fixing of the stairwell trimmer
Slide the stairwell trimmer into the two joist hanger from the fitting of the joist hanger stage, fix the hangers to the stairwell trimmer using the hammer (Paslode PPN 35i may also be using if available).

Marking out for the trimmed joists - using a tape, pencil and set square
Transfer the dimension for the trimmed joists from the joist plan onto the stairwell trimmer and mark up with the tape and pencil, NOTE these dimension should line up with the marks on the inner skin of the super structure from the marking out of the joists stage, square the marks up ready for the joist hangers using the pencil and set square.

Fitting of the joist hangers for the trimmed joists - using a hammer
Put the joist hangers onto the stairwell trimmer, line it up with the marks from the previous stage and fix them into position using the hammer (Paslode PPN 35i may also be using if available).

Measuring and marking up of the trimmed joists
Measure the inside the hangers on the stairwell to the inside face of the inner skin of the super structure where the trimmed joists are going to be positioned using the tape, ensure 100mm/4 inch is added to allow the joist to sit on the load bearing wall at one end by 100mm/4 inch, transfer the dimensions onto the joists and mark.

Cutting of the trimmed joists - using the chop saw

Using the chop saw, put the joists on and cut to the marks

Positioning and fixing of the trimmed joists - using a hammer
Slide the trimmed joists into the joist hangers on the stairwell trimmer, fix the hangers to the trimmed joists using the hammer (Paslode PPN 35i may also be using if available).

Fitting of decking - using a tape, pencil, rip saw and nail gun
Place the first sheet in line with the noggins at the end of the joists and 25mm in from the inside face of the inner skin of the super structure and fix into position using the nail gun, glue tongue of the second sheet and slid into the grove of the first sheet, ensure the second sheet is perfectly in line with the first sheet and fix into position using the nail gun, repeat procedure until first row is complete, if a cut sheet is required measure from the end of the last full sheet and up to the inside face of the inner skin of the super structure, ensure you deduct 25mm/1 inch for clearance and transfer the marks onto a full sheet, cut down the marks using the rip saw, glue the tongue of the cut sheet and slide it into the groove of the last full sheet, ensure the cut sheet is perfectly in line with the last full sheet and fasten into position with the nail gun, all other rows to be carried out in the same sequence as the first row ensuring joints are staggered.
