Apprentice Joiner

Case Study

Daniel Hale Age: 21

NVQ Carpentry and Joinery - Level 3.

Oliver Wild Ltd Joinery Subcontractors

Commenced: November 2012

OLIVER WILD CARPENTRY & JOINERY CONTRACTORS would like to nominate Daniel Hale, for his ‘passion for construction’, being an outstanding mentor to younger members of his team and his contribution to local charities. Daniel is currently studying Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery at Don Valley College.

Prior to his apprenticeship, Daniel was working as a labourer on a pig farm in Barnsley in a position offering little career progression he soon realised that the industry wasn’t for him.

Daniel has been highly successful in his apprenticeship so far. He is currently excelling at college and has gained extensive knowledge of working on new build and refurbishments, involving traditional and modern methods of construction. Daniel’s peers have nothing but praise for him claiming he has “unwavering enthusiasm and energy, embracing innovative ways of working and commitment to safety.”

To ensure he could meet the geographic demands of the industry, Daniel saved his wages to ensure that upon turning 17 years old, he could undertake an intensive “crash” car driving course, having spent years travelling around West Yorkshire alongside ‘Master Carpenter’ Jamie Booker, he is now able to travel to sites independently and meet the geographical requirements of his role.

After volunteering to be the company’s Apprenticeship Mentor, he has inspired potential recruits whilst representing OLIVER WILD by giving presentations about apprenticeships in local schools. This passion made Daniel the obvious choice to speak about his apprenticeship experiences at last year’s company Dinner Dance. Daniel presented confidently to the company’s 100 strong workforce.

Earlier this year Daniel was influential in setting up an Apprentice Forum for the company. The idea was to set up a regular gathering for apprentices across the company to share their experiences of being an apprentice, as well as providing an opportunity to meet and gain support from peers.

In recent months Daniel has taken responsibility for line-managing a number of work placement students. His staunch passion for apprenticeships has proved contagious with these students.

Daniel took the lead on coordinating the renovation of the Alcohol and Liver Disease unit, managing the budget that the team were able to get donated. Through detailed planning and team spirit, Daniel ensured that the project was delivered on time to ensure the unit could provide a valuable resource for the local community. As part of the project Daniel also volunteered his free time to successfully work as part of a team to organise a wide range of fundraising.

Director of the Company Faye Wild said “Danny’s progress has been exceptional; his enthusiasm, commitment and passion for construction inspires others and we hope to be able to continue to help this bright young star in his future career development.”
